The Koronavirus Blues with Septerhed

In the beginning, there was a locust that swarmed over the Sahara. The deafening buzzing sound created a vortex that swirled across the plains, creating a thick black sludge. The sludge flowed into the Mediterranean Sea, swallowing all gill-bearing life. The sludge grew in size as it devastated Macedonia, then Bucharest and Belarus. Gaining speed, the sludge made a sharp left at Estonia and headed toward the Baltic Sea, where it was met by a corona discharge of luminous plasma. The brutal collision caused the sludge to shoot skyward twisting into tentacles of shimmering, gooey light. There it stayed, churning & whirling and making a cacophonous clamor. Until, one day, like a miracle, it just disappeared. The ancient mystics gave the thing a name. Thy name is Septerhed.

But seriously, dude, how are you doing?
Thanks for asking. Dishonestly? Fantastic. Every day is a ray of sunshine that brightens my existence.
Honestly? I feel dumpster fire with a hint of endless melancholy. Like if bad survived a terrible mess and was waiting for a shit-show to take over.
How many days have you been self-quarantining?
None. I've been mostly alone, but not completely. Jesus has been by my side, but he's not washing his hands at all.
When did it hit you how serious the crisis was?
When I couldn't buy TP or water. When the streets were empty. Empty shelves. When my job sent me home.
Have you had any art shows cancelled as a result?
No. Some extensions though.
What have you been doing with the downtime?
Worrying, contemplating, prepping, crying, traveling, smoking, quitting smoking, yelling, nervously smiling and IDK. As best as any 1st time pandemic person can be.
Are you not finding current events inspiring?
Not really. I was in such a bad place in 2019, it's kind of just an extension.
What's been the most challenging aspect for you?
Finding work, money, logistics, worrying about loved ones. Figuring out what the fuck is happening every historic day.
Do you have any coping mechanisms?
Perhaps legal stimulants, my sub-woofer and dreams of nicotine consumption. Honestly nothing is really helping me cope. I keep searching though. I will always keep searching. I will.
What's the thing/place you wish you could go/do right now?
Hang out with Gener. As a Gener myself it's hard to not be around another one. Maybe it's best. It's all fleeting. I always think I know what I need, but my inability to catch a break and learn how to love myself ruins all. Little bits of here and there get us to the next little bit.
Okay, I'm just gonna pretend to know what a Gener is.
Have you done any binge watching, book reading' or game playing?
No. I can't focus on anything like that.
Favorite work of art in Los Angeles?
A mural by Dr Knudson on Fountain. Best mural in L.A. Fact!
The Dr. Knudson Mural on Fountain

What's on heavy rotation in your ear holes?
Alec Empire, Dogleg, Beneath the Massacre, Svalbard, God Mother, Tame Impala, Napalm Death, Loathe, Frontierer, Sectioned, Dan Deacon, CHRISTWVRKS, Sanction, The Jezabels, CULT LEADER, Petbrick, Jeen, Brutus, The Middle Kids, Hath.

Favorite brand of toilet paper and where to find it during an apocalypse?
Charmin. Maybe you can find it online and have it delivered by April 14th?
What's your hoarder food of choice?
Peanut butter.
What brand though?
Natural. Any brand, I think.
I had to scour my Fakebook timeline to figure this out, but I think I've known you for 7 years now. But only very recently discovered that you've had a dog this whole time.
I've had him for 11 years. It's getting toward the end though. It makes me realize the smartest thing I ever did was NOT get anyone pregnant. I can barely handle a dog. I'm a mess and selfish.
How do you think this all ends?
With me typing this: "THERE'S NOT ENOUGH TIME!"
Good talk, bro!

Hey, kids, head over to the Septerhed site and buy some art!

Sneak Peek: Wish List 3.0 at Gabba Gallery

It's that time of the year again. Christmas lights are being hung way too early, the stench of pumpkin spice hangs thick in the air, and bratty kids are scrambling to get their names expunged from the naughty ledger. But it's also time to rejoice, because Gabba Gallery's annual Wish List show is upon us! Wish List 3.0 will be a constantly morphing group show featuring over 60 artists that run the gamut of visual mediums. Nothing in the show will be priced higher than $1,000 and much will be had for far less. This year, the show includes the likes of Alex Schaefer, Amy Smith, Cody Bayne, Jennifer Korsen, Kate Kelton, Leba, Loudlabs, Nicole Bruckman, Septerhed, Pastey Whyte and Valerie Pobjoy, just to name a few. It's all cash & carry, so as one piece is sold, a new piece takes it's place on the wall. So, you should come early and stay a while just to watch the exhibit shape-shift. The show is so massive it needs two openings! The first opening will take place November 14th, with the second on December 12th. Below is just a small preview of what's in store. Top pic is from My Dog Sighs.

Art Pick of the Month: Wish List at Gabba Gallery

So, you always wanted an original Septerhed painting, an Alex Schaefer nude, or a Jennifer Korsen heart in your collection, but thought you couldn't afford it? I have good news for you. Gabba Gallery has your back! Wish List is a massive group show featuring over 65 great artists, and the kicker is that nothing in the show will cost more than $1,000. Much of the work will be selling far below that cap. Which is perfect for you because Christmas is coming and Uncle Skeeter would really love a Max Neutra bunny, right? Well guess what? Max has about twenty of 'em in this show (plus a couple foxes). Aunt Martha, the cat lover? Check out the Nicole Bruckman painting (below). In addition to Septerhed, and Korsen, many other well known street artists have work in the show, like ThrashbirdCANTSTOPGOODBOY, Hero, and Moncho 1929. John Park is in the show! Aaron Nagel! There's work by one of the best assemblage artists in Los Angeles, Jaime Becker.  There's a fantastic collab by Phobik and Gabba owner Jason Ostro. What I'm saying is this is a fully loaded, star-studded show and it's ALL affordable! Let me give you one hot tip though (two actually), Valerie Pobjoy and Phil Santos are amazing young artists whose brushstroke mastery holds echoes of John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Yes, they are THAT good, and I'm sure their work be selling for tens of thousands of dollars in short time. Trust me, you don't want to miss out on these two. Under $1K? Run, don't walk to this show. You even get to take it home with you on the spot! It's cash and carry, with a constant rotation. See the full artist line-up on the flyer below.

Post Opening Update 11/16/2014

Wow! That was a stellar show. I'm truly honored to have been a part of it. Hats off to Jason Ostro and Phil Santos for curating such a diverse and talented bunch of artists. There had to be over 200 people at the opening (causing me a low level panic attack). Some friends I haven't seen in nearly 30 years came out!

One of the best things about Wish List is that it will remain fresh for the duration it's run. Cash and carry ensures that a constant rotation of art will be happening. I saw Jason pulling sold pieces off the wall, handing them off to staff for wrapping, and running to the back to select the replacement piece. Seeing a Valerie Pobjoy stunner be hung was a particular pleasure.

I wanted to share some of my favorites from the show, by Thrashbird and Dave McDowell, plus a few new discoveries (Sarah Stieber, Amy Davis) I made along the way...
